Cover Curriculum

The Curriculum is the totality of the pupils’ learning experiences. We believe that our curriculum should be broad, balanced and relevant to meet the needs of all children regardless of their ability.

The National Curriculum is taught and endorsed by set schemes of work that the school has invested in. This is to ensure children have a range of learning experiences that stimulate, challenge and promote thinking and learning.

Aims of the curriculum:
o To promote high standards in Literacy and Numeracy.
o To enable children to be confident in I.C.T
o To enable children to acquire Scientific knowledge and skills
o To promote an awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle
o To promote mental and physical development
o To develop every child’s personal and social skills
o To provide opportunity for every child to make progress
o To prepare children for the responsibilities, experiences opportunities of adult life
o To enable children to learn to love learning.

Children gain all of the above regardless of ability the curriculum is such so that each child reaches their optimum.

The Curriculum is planned effectively to provide continuity and progression. It promotes an enjoyment of learning and is committed to learning and achieving. Through the provision of rich and varied activities we aim to encourage the best possible progress and the highest attainment for all pupils. We support pupils to think creatively and solve problems. We aim to develop pupils’ capacity to learn and work independently and collaboratively when required.

The organisation of the curriculum

o The curriculum is taught through discrete subjects and where relevant linked topic area.
o Medium term plans are planned units of work usually over half term durations.
o These contain the detail of the work to be covered with a progression of learning objectives. This work will be indicative of how the work will be differentiated and what the pupil outcomes will be.
o Short term planning is carried out in an agreed format in detail for all subjects. Differentiation is clearly stated in this planning for Numeracy and Literacy.
o The children will be taught in ability groups for most subjects. This enables the teaching to focus on a particular level of ability.
o Using the National Curriculum Framework and the Literacy/Numeracy strategies, the QCA schemes of work and additional school resources, units of work will be planned.

The head teacher has the responsibility for the leadership of the Curriculum and has responsibility to the staff. This ensures that the Curriculum has progression and appropriate coverage.

The class teacher ensures that the Curriculum is taught and the aims are achieved for the class. The Deputy Head ensures that the progress of each child is tracked and that there is appropriate challenge, support and intervention.
